Still employed!

Yesterday I received some fabulous news... my work term at EBC has been extended until January 12th, 2007. YAY! Getting the extension is a huge relief and gives me some financial stability at least for a few more months. :)

Really. You don't believe me? Okay.. you're right. I am still out here... work has been consuming most of my energy. Spending 7 hours/day in front of a computer at work doing data analysis doesn't really make me feel like spending much time on mine here at home... I'm sure everyone can sympathize. :)

Speaking of work....
We were handed our official notices of our work term ending this coming Friday, which we knew was coming. There's still a chance that we'll get extended, but I'm not going to count on it although there's still tons of work left to do.

I finished the Belfry site and it turned out pretty good. There were a few major burps, but it all seems to be sorted out now.

Banquo...
....has been on hiatus while Adam and Jude do an Eastern Canada tour until mid-October. Jen moved to Montreal at the end of August to attend McGill, which left us with a gap in the band (big time). As luck had it, Adam's aunt, Lael, was moving here from Mayne Island. Eric and I met with her this past Wednesday and happily welcomed her to our merry band of rogues. Not only does she have a lovely voice, she also plays winds (flute, whistles, recorders) and percussion.

Been doing some reading...
I finished the new Dragonriders of Pern book, "Dragon's Fire", by Todd & Anne McCaffrey last night and what a delight it was to read. This storyline continues 500 years after landing in the same time period as Todd's "Dragon's Kin". I think it's wonderful that Todd is now writing about Pern and carrying on this wonderful tale.. it's difficult to tell his writing from his mother's! :)

I'm Mellllllllting.......

What a hot weekend... we've had 30+°C temperatures here in Victoria. Thankfully it's been relatively cool here in my basement suite. Yesterday at Luminara was brutal, though... it didn't cool off very much after dark; we all were sweating like crazy in our costumes.

Other than the heat, the event went well last night. As always, the crowd was receptive and appreciative. People were very interested; had many ask after our instruments, our repertoire and costuming on our breaks. Over the course of the evening I must have had well over 20 comments on my "cool" hat (it was actually hot... wool is NOT cool) and some even knew that it was a tricorn that I was wearing. :P

The rest of my weekend has been spent working on the new Belfry Theatre website. The publicist wants to have it online for August 3rd, so I don't have time for much else for the next while.

Luminara lantern festival this weekend

We had our rehearsal for Luminara this evening. We've got a great selection of tunes picked out for the event! So, if you happen to be in Victoria on Saturday, come and check it out... I hear it's good (as a performer I never get to see the event).

I don't know exactly where we are situated except that we're in Zone 2, which is the area around Goodacre Lake (north end of the park). :)

We were out performing at Happy Valley Herb Farm today. It's been a few years since we were last there. What a treat it was to visit again! My former neighbour, Maggie, was married there today and hired Banquo to be wandering minstrels. It was a lovely time (how can it not in that space?!).

It was just three of us (Jude, Eric and I) performing instrumental music. We played a fair amount of O'Carolan, which is always a good choice. Everyone was happy with the music and loved our costuming. They even fed us, which was awesome.. the fare was really good. :)

We played for about 4hrs in total. After spending the afternoon in the sun and lavender fields, I'm ready for bed and it's only 8:30 pm as I write this.

Wow. I've truly been a slacker on here. I've no excuse, really. I'll try to catch everyone up in brief..

Folkfest on July 2nd was an amazing experience for the band. What a treat it was to work with such dedicated professionals! Stage management had everything under control and I could go on for paragraphs about how fabulous the sound crew were. In a nutshell, they made it easy for us and made us sound awesome. They used a subwoofer on the dumbek which was literally a real stage shaker. That was fun. Weeeeeeeeee! *grin*

The performance itself went really well. We recycled our set from Fernfest, which has a lot of our up-tempo pieces and works well for a festival performance (less instrument changes, too!). It was really great to look out into the crowd and see people grooving. We closed the show with "a la mode de France" (aka Nonesuch) and people started dancing... it's just one of those songs.

One of Adam's friends was taking pictures using a professional digital camera, but I have yet to receive copies. I hope he does soon, as some of the pictures looked great..

Back to work at Elections BC on Monday morning. I received a call from them this morning offering me another full-time temp position until September 15th (the day before my birthday). There's a possibility of an extension so that would be a good birthday present. :P

I've been designing and building the new Belfry Theatre website and it's looking good! We're aiming to launch it on August 3rd.. I'm going to be a busy lad for the next few weeks. :-/
